Cmdr. Steven L. Schmidt is a native of Norwalk, Connecticut and Marlton, New Jersey. He is a 1997 graduate of the University of Delaware. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as an operations specialist.
 
In December 1997, Cmdr. Schmidt reported for his first assignment aboard USS Shiloh (CG 67). In 1998 he deployed to the Arabian Gulf as part of the Abraham Lincoln Battle Group in support of Operation Southern Watch. After earning his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) qualification and advancing to the rank of 2nd class petty officer, he was selected for Officer Candidate School (OCS) and commissioned in January 2000.
 
In June 2000, Cmdr. Schmidt reported to USS Cleveland (LPD 7) as the combat information center officer, electronic warfare officer and legal officer. In 2001 he deployed to the Arabian Gulf with the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group (ARG). In June 2002, Cmdr. Schmidt reported to USS Curts (FFG 38) as navigator and deployed in support of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 2003. Cmdr. Schmidt reported to the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) in December 2003 where he served as a naval science instructor, advanced navigation curse coordinator and surface warfare career information program coordinator.
 
In February 2008, Cmdr. Schmidt reported to USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19) as the operations officer. He led Mesa Verde through post-commissioning testing and trials, shock trials and the 50th anniversary of UNITAS. In June 2009, Cmdr. Schmidt reported to Commander, Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 8 as the staff operations and plans officer (N3). He deployed in January 2010 with the Nassau ARG and 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (24th MEU) in support of Operation Unified Response in Haiti and Maritime Security Operations in Commander, U.S. 5th Fleet (C5F).
 
In February 2011, Cmdr. Schmidt assumed command of PC Crew Mike and commanded USS Tempest (PC 2) and USS Chinook (PC 9), where he deployed to C5F in support of Operation New Dawn. In May of 2012, Cmdr. Schmidt reported to OPNAV N96 as the LCS mission modules requirements officer. In November 2013, Cmdr. Schmidt reported to the Joint Staff, J5 in the Deputy Directorate for Joint Strategic Planning (DDJSP).
 
In February 2017, Cmdr. Schmidt reported to USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43) as the executive officer. He assumed command of Fort McHenry in August 2018 and deployed in December 2018 with the Kearsarge ARG and 26th MEU. He reported to Expeditionary Warfare Training Group, Atlantic (EWTGLANT) in January 2020.
 
Cmdr. Schmidt earned a Masters of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies through the Naval War College, and is a fully qualified Joint Service Officer. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and various unit and service awards.
